Survey: Trust in Government During Reform
I invite Bahraini citizens aged 18 or over who live in Bahrain to take part in an anonymous academic survey on how far citizens trust government bodies and how they have experienced public services and reforms in recent years. The data will be used for my research at Princeton University. It takes about 10 minutes, in Arabic or English, and asks for no names or contact details. Please read the participant information sheet below before you begin.
Participant information sheet
Study title: Trust in Government During Reform: A Survey of Bahraini Citizens
What is the purpose of the study?
This study asks how much Bahraini citizens trust individual government bodies, how they have experienced public services and reforms in recent years, and which qualities of government, such as clear rules, equal treatment and the correction of mistakes, shape that trust. Some questions come from the Arab Barometer, a regional survey, so that answers can be compared with other Arab countries.
Who can take part in the study?
Bahraini citizens aged 18 or over who live in Bahrain.
Do I have to take part?
Participation is entirely voluntary. You may skip any question and stop at any time without giving a reason and without penalty. Because the survey is anonymous, answers cannot be withdrawn after you press Submit, since there is no way to tell which answers are yours.
What will happen to me if I take part?
You will answer an online questionnaire of about 10 minutes on a phone or computer, in Arabic or English. The questions cover trust in institutions, your recent dealings with government bodies, recent reforms, and some background information such as your age group and governorate.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There is no direct benefit to you. The findings will help researchers and the public understand how reforms affect trust in government bodies in Bahrain.
What if something goes wrong?
If you are unhappy about the way the study is carried out, please contact the researcher at the address below.
Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?
The survey does not ask for your name, phone number, email address or exact age, and the researcher cannot see who took part. Please do not write names or identifying details in the comment box. Any that appear will be deleted. Answers are collected on KoBoToolbox, a nonprofit survey platform used by universities and research organizations, on its European server, and are then kept by the researcher in password-protected files. Results are reported only in combined form, never one by one.
What will happen to the results of the research study?
The combined results will be used for academic research, including presentations to academic audiences at Princeton University, and later for publications and a book on trust in government during reform. No results will be published, and no data released, until approval has been granted by the relevant authorities in Bahrain. Once that approval is in place, a summary will be posted at saqeralkhalifa.com, and an anonymous version of the data, with the questionnaire and a guide to the variables, may be placed in a public research data archive so that other researchers, teachers and students can use it. The public version would not include the written comments.
Who is organizing and funding the research?
Dr. Saqer AlKhalifa. The study has no external funding and has not been commissioned by any government body.
Who has reviewed the study?
The study has received ethical clearance from a university research committee in Bahrain.
